Great sound, You cant compare the sound you get out of this system especially in this price range. Great unit many inputs and a good mellow sub woofer, fills the room at half volume.
Subwoofer bulky and doesn't add much, (What's this?) Onkyo makes great speakers, and I'm very impressed by these as well-- my only complaint is the extremely massive Subwoofer that doesn't deliver much oomf. I have toyed with the levels, and think they need to work on the size/effectiveness ratio of the woofer.
amazing product, product is great for the price..the sound surpassed my old receiver.the only thing i wished i had known b-4 buying it doesn't have a HDMI for hook up to a dvd or tv.
home theatre system, (What's this?) Great sound. Quality speakers, especially the Woofer! Many different sound modes to choose from.
Searched and Searched for the right system..., I never write reviews, but I had to on this one. I searched for a long time trying to find out the "right" way to get 5.1 audio. You have to read quite a bit to figure it out. A lot of companies are selling things you probably don't need (7.1 sound, multiple disc dvd players integrated, etc) (especially if you are cost conscious). So...
Onkyo makes quality products... A+
This system is great for an apartment.
Use the optical option for your sound (cables are cheap - 6 bucks). I ran one from my samsung upconverting DVD player and one from my HD cable box. You have to have this to get the 5.1 DTS or Dolby sound. Otherwise it's just an algorithm simulating it.
There is no HDMI passthrough...but I read that sometimes it doesn't even pass audio, so you would have to go optical anyway.
Nice receiver but not a home theater system, (What's this?) On the plus side:
The receiver is very easy to set up. The system menu allows for programming the sound output to less than 5 speakers.
On the negative side:
The receiver is a little on the bulky side. Plus, I would call this a receiver not a home theater system. There are connections for multiple components but as received it is only a receiver and speakers.
Great system for price, (What's this?) I wanted to add a surround sound system to our seasonal home without breaking the bank, and this one was the perfect solution. Though it doesn't deliver quite the sound as the professional audiophile system in our primary home, it was a small fraction of the price of that system and produces surround sound that's quite acceptable for our ears. As other reviewers have noted, it lacks any HDMI inputs (though that's not really a problem because there are plenty of other connectors that allow comparable quality) or a microphone for automatic volume set-up among the speakers (not a problem, either, since you can do it yourself to suit your personal tastes in a few minutes). And the speaker wires are a little small (I simply replaced them with heavier wire for less than $20 -- although it probably makes no discernible difference). Sound is clear and crisp, great bass from the powered subwoofer, and will add respectable surround sound to any room at a very affordable price. I couldn't be happier about the value.
Onkyo SR700 cables, (What's this?) If you have heard Bose in a showroom and are expecting
that kind of music/clarity i have two words for you..."price tag" -
at 299 bucks its totally worth it as an entry level-not an audiophile-I live in a rented apartment-kind of a situation.
Just 2 small issues No HDMI - I knew it did not have that going into it but its worth repeating for eveyone once again.
2nd Do not expect "all" the cables as a first time buyer I was expecting everything to come in the box, uhh ohh I was in a surprise...so here's the list of cables you can order from monoprice.
Onkyo HT-SR700S 5.1, This Home Theater Entertainment System works great for me , plus the price was right.
Amazing Value, (What's this?) I'm amazed at how much electronics our bucks buy nowadays, especially this system. I set it up on one side of the fairly large room we use for home entertainment. The system conveys the delicacy and power of all the sounds you hear in a film or TV show, including the music, with clarity and without distortion. It even sounds surprisingly good when just music-listening to CDs or the receiver's radio. Onkyo gives you a lot of choices about the "listening mode," and there should always be one to please anyone but the diehard audiophile.
I also bought "Premier" wall-mounts from Amazon, and they're perfect for these satelite speakers.
It took me a while to figure out which kinds of cables to purchase, but the user's manual explains that pretty clearly. Buy the best cables you can for hooking up your audio and video components and your TV to the receiver. That would probably include "component video" cables for most of the video connections, and optical cables for most of the audio connections.

DTS 5.1 Neo:6 DTS Neo:6 5.1 is an advanced matrix decoder that takes any two-channel source (say, a VHS tape, a television broadcast, a CD or a DVD) and expands it into a surround sound field for a 5.1 system. It also provides separate, optimized modes for stereo music materials and matrix surround motion picture soundtracks. The trade-off between home theater packages and separate components is essentially an issue of quality. The market is overflowing with cookie-cutter packages straight off the assembly line. These packages are an amalgam of cost-cutting reductions from the amplification stage right through to the speaker cones.Taking a different tack, Onkyo has drawn from the strength of its stand-alone A/V receiver line-up to drive the HT-SR700 5.1-channel receiver/speaker package. Stripping down to the essentialsvideo switching capabilities and HDTV connectivity; circuitry that preserves audio signal purity; and ease-of-setup and straightforward operabilitythe HT-SR700 is cost-effective for the user, not cost-sensitive to the manufacturer.
